Kanshin Hongonsho
“Therefore, observe your mind diligently. When you observe your mind, the Buddhas of the three existences, all Bodhisattvas, heavenly beings, benevolent deities, dragon kings, attendants, and all sentient beings are contained within the observation of your mind. For this reason, the observation of your mind is the very object of devotion itself. The object of devotion is the observation of your mind itself. The observation of your mind and the object of devotion are one and the same.” (Writings, p.317)
Meaning
This passage teaches that deeply observing our own minds is the way to connect with the true Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, heavenly beings, benevolent deities, dragon kings, attendants, and all sentient beings. It powerfully demonstrates that deeply observing our minds is the very “object of devotion” that we should rely upon.
Explanation
The great Nichiren taught that each of us inherently possesses the Buddha nature, or the mind of enlightenment, within us. However, when our minds are clouded by delusions and attachments, we obscure that Buddha nature and lose sight of true happiness.
The important practice here is called “observing the mind.” This refers to the practice of calmly observing one’s own mind, perceiving the delusions and attachments lurking within, and removing them.
Through the practice of observing the mind, we gradually approach the Buddha nature that exists in the depths of our minds, and are guided towards true happiness. Nichiren taught that this Buddha nature is the very “object of devotion” that we should rely upon.
Encouragement
In our daily lives, we may face various difficulties and worries. However, it is especially important during such times not to forget to observe our minds.
Calm your mind, focus on your breathing, and observe what you are truly feeling in this present moment, as it is. You will then become aware of the various thoughts and emotions lurking within, and the way you are bound by them.
By continuing to observe your mind, you will gradually approach the Buddha nature at the depths of your mind, and feel the true strength and wisdom welling up from within. This will give you the courage and hope to face any difficulty.
