Encouraging Passages from Saint Nichiren’s Writings

Letter to Shijo Kingo

“If the deities, good spirits, and humans seek to harm me, I will surely dispel them by the power of the Buddhist Law. The Buddhist Law appeared in this world to save all living beings. Therefore, those who believe in and revere the Buddhist Law can live without any fear and in peace.”

Meaning

These words from the letter are what Saint Nichiren said to Shijo Kingo. Shijo Kingo was a disciple of Saint Nichiren and a devout follower. However, the social conditions at the time were harsh, and Saint Nichiren was facing persecution. Shijo Kingo was also experiencing hardships due to his faith in Saint Nichiren.

These words from the letter were spoken to encourage Shijo Kingo in such circumstances. Saint Nichiren explains that the Buddhist Law appeared in this world to save all living beings, and states that those who believe in and revere the Buddhist Law can live without any fear and in peace.

Explanation

These words from the letter reflect Saint Nichiren’s deep faith. Even when facing persecution, Saint Nichiren never wavered from the path of the Buddhist Law. And he wished for his disciples, including Shijo Kingo, to similarly believe in the Buddhist Law and live with courage.

These words from the letter give us courage even in modern society. Like Saint Nichiren, it’s important for us to walk our own path without giving in to any difficulties.
