Words of encouragement from the writings of Nichiren Daishonin:
Words of encouragement from Nichiren Daishonin’s writings “On Selecting the Time”:
Original text:
The method of studying Buddhism is to first understand the time. For example, a person who takes medicine must first know their illness. One who takes medicine without knowing their illness cannot cure it. It is the same for those who study Buddhism. How can one obtain the true benefits of the Lotus Sutra without knowing the impure and evil time of the Latter Day of the Law?
Meaning:
To study Buddhism, it is important to first understand the era in which one lives. To use an analogy, to cure a disease, one must first know their condition. Taking medicine without knowing one’s condition will not cure the disease. The same applies to studying Buddhism. Without understanding the impure and evil era of the Latter Day of the Law, one cannot obtain the true benefits of the Lotus Sutra.
Explanation:
This passage is written at the beginning of “On Selecting the Time”. Nichiren Daishonin explained that the era of the Latter Day of the Law is an impure and evil time filled with earthly desires and sufferings, where many people are far from the correct teachings. He emphasizes that for us living in such an era, it is most important to correctly understand and practice the teachings of the Lotus Sutra.
Encouragement:
This passage gives us courage and hope. Even in difficult times, by believing in the teachings of the Lotus Sutra, we can attain true happiness. Let us strive to follow the spirit of Nichiren Daishonin and persevere through the impure and evil era of the Latter Day of the Law.
