Original Text
In this world, the Buddha’s Law is this one wonderful Law alone. This Law enables all living beings in the nine worlds to attain Buddhahood. The Buddhas and Tathagatas practiced for eighty thousand kalpas to realize this Law. Therefore, this Law is the heart of all Buddhas and Tathagatas.
Meaning
This passage is from Nichiren Daishonin’s “Treatise on Zou Yan”. In it, the Daishonin powerfully expounds on the preciousness of the Buddha’s Law.
First, it states “In this world, the Buddha’s Law is this one wonderful Law alone”, indicating that in this world (our realm), the true Buddha’s Law is this one Law alone. In other words, the teaching that brings true salvation cannot be found in other religions or philosophies, but only in the Buddha’s Law.
Then, it says “This Law enables all living beings in the nine worlds to attain Buddhahood”, explaining that this Buddha’s Law has the power to liberate all beings from suffering and lead them to the same state of enlightenment as the Buddha. The nine worlds refer to the six paths (heavenly beings, human beings, asuras, animals, hungry spirits, and hell dwellers) and the three realms (desire, form, and formless), encompassing all existences.
Furthermore, “The Buddhas and Tathagatas practiced for eighty thousand kalpas to realize this Law” indicates that all Buddhas and Tathagatas, including Shakyamuni Buddha, were able to realize this Buddha’s Law only after practicing for the incredibly long period of eighty thousand kalpas. A kalpa is a unit of time representing an extremely long period, so eighty thousand kalpas is an uncountable number of years. This shows how precious this teaching is.
Finally, “Therefore, this Law is the heart of all Buddhas and Tathagatas” emphasizes that this Buddha’s Law is the lifeline and essence of all Buddhas and Tathagatas. In other words, the Buddha’s Law is the teaching that all Buddhas and Tathagatas cherish most, and it is this teaching that will guide us to true happiness.
Explanation
This passage conveys Nichiren Daishonin’s deep faith in the Buddha’s Law and his strong desire to save people. All the various sufferings and worries we face can be resolved through the Buddha’s Law. If we seek true happiness, it is important to study and practice Nichiren Daishonin’s teachings.
