Encouraging Words from Nichiren Daishonin’s Writings:
Original Text
“Therefore, the people of the Latter Day of the Law who chant ‘Nam-myoho-renge-kyo’ are like those who are in a treasure tower but do not see treasures of gold, silver, or jewels. The key to the treasure tower is ‘Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.’ In order to use this key to open the treasure tower and obtain treasures of gold, silver, and jewels, the power of faith is necessary. The power of faith is like a blind person’s cane. Without the cane, one cannot walk. Without faith, one cannot attain the blessings of the Buddha’s teachings.”
Modern Translation
“Therefore, those in the Latter Day of the Law who chant ‘Nam-myoho-renge-kyo’ are like people within a treasure tower who cannot see treasures of gold, silver, or jewels. ‘Nam-myoho-renge-kyo’ is the key to this treasure tower. To use this key to open the treasure tower and retrieve treasures of gold, silver, and jewels, one must have faith. The power of faith is like a blind person’s cane. Just as a cane is necessary for a blind person to walk and avoid obstacles, faith is necessary to gain the benefits of the Buddha’s teachings.”
Explanation
This passage was expounded by Nichiren Daishonin for the people of the Latter Day of the Law.
The Latter Day of the Law refers to a time more than 2,000 years after the passing of Shakyamuni Buddha, when understanding the truth became difficult. During such times, people face various troubles and sufferings.
Nichiren Daishonin recommends chanting ‘Nam-myoho-renge-kyo’ to such people. This is because ‘Nam-myoho-renge-kyo’ serves as the key to the treasure tower, and through the power of faith, one can unlock it and gain the treasures—namely, the benefits of the Buddha’s teachings.
However, without the power of faith, even possessing the key to the treasure tower won’t allow one to unlock it. The power of faith is likened to a blind person’s cane, which helps them walk and avoid obstacles.
