Encouraging Words from Nichiren Daishonin: From the Letter to the Nun of the Thousand Days

Original Text

No matter how hard it is, you must chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. When you chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, all Buddhas, bodhisattvas, heavenly beings, and dragon kings will surely protect you. (Gosho, p. 1290)

Meaning

No matter how difficult the situation, it is important to keep chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. By chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, all Buddhas, bodhisattvas, heavenly beings, and dragon kings will surely protect you.

Explanation

In this letter, Nichiren Daishonin sends words of encouragement to a woman named the Nun of the Thousand Days. Her husband, Abutsu-bo, was exiled to Sado, and she herself was suffering from illness.

Despite such difficult circumstances, Daishonin advises her to keep chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. This is because Nam-myoho-renge-kyo has the power to overcome all hardships and lead to true happiness.

Our lives are filled with various hardships and trials. However, if we continue to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo without losing hope, all Buddhas, bodhisattvas, heavenly beings, and dragon kings will surely protect us and lead us to true happiness, overcoming all difficulties.
