Encouraging words from the writings of Nichiren Daishonin:
Encouraging words from Nichiren Daishonin’s Gosho “Kanjin Honzon Sho”
Original Text
“Therefore, the people of the Latter Day of the Law should solely chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. All other practices are merely auxiliary means. It is like the clay vessels used to store gold and silver treasures. Though clay itself is not a treasure, because it holds treasure, it can also be regarded as a treasure. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the true treasure, while other practices are merely the expedient means.”
Modern Translation
“Therefore, people in the Latter Day of the Law should simply chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Other practices are all just expedient means. It’s like making a clay vessel to store gold and silver treasures. The clay vessel itself is not a treasure, but because it stores treasures, it also becomes a treasure. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the true treasure, and other practices are expedient means.”
Explanation
This passage is from the beginning of “Kanjin Honzon Sho”. Nichiren Daishonin teaches that the most important practice for people in the Latter Day of the Law is to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the title of the Lotus Sutra, which contains the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha. By chanting it, we can reach the same state of enlightenment as the Buddha.
Nichiren Daishonin refers to other practices as “expedient clay vessels.” This means that other practices are useful for spreading the teachings of Buddhism but are not the ultimate goal.
The important thing is to believe and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the true treasure. By doing so, we can achieve true happiness and enlightenment.
Encouragement from these words
These words give us hope and courage. For those of us living in the harsh times of the Latter Day, the simple practice of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the path to true happiness and enlightenment.
Even if other practices do not go well, by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, we can connect with the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha.
With these words in our hearts, let us strive daily in our lives.
