Encouraging excerpt from the writings of the great Nichiren: The Sado Gosho, detailed version

Original Text

Iron becomes a sword when beaten by flames. The wise and sages should be tried and tested with abuse.

Meaning

Iron is tempered into a hard and strong sword by repeatedly being struck by flames. Similarly, true sages can polish their true worth and grow by overcoming harsh criticism and trials. The great Nichiren declared his strong will to propagate the true Buddhist teachings even amidst the hardship of his exile to Sado Island.

Explanation

This passage is one of the most famous encouraging words found in the Sado Gosho. In 1272, the great Nichiren was exiled to Sado Island after initially being sentenced to exile in Izu. However, even in such severe circumstances, Nichiren never lost hope and continued to assert that the Lotus Sutra was the true Buddhist teachings.

This message deeply resonates with our own lives. In life, we will inevitably face situations that do not go as planned and encounter difficulties. However, it is precisely during such times that we must hold firmly to our will and face challenges sincerely. By overcoming hardships, we can become stronger and gain deeper wisdom.

Examples

  • Bears that hibernate through the harsh winter can gain more active energy in the spring.
  • Climbers who persevere can enjoy the beautiful view from the mountain summit.
  • A well-honed blade can cut sharply and defeat enemies.

Nichiren’s Strong Will

Even in the desperate situation of his exile to Sado Island, the great Nichiren never lost hope. This was because Nichiren had firm conviction in the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and a strong will. Nichiren acted based on his beliefs and was prepared to risk his life to propagate the true Buddhist teachings.

Encouragement for Us

These words from the great Nichiren give us courage and hope. When facing difficulties, it is important for us to remember Nichiren’s strong will and have the courage to uphold our own beliefs. It is also important to maintain an attitude of continuous learning and growth, just as Nichiren did.
